Agree Joss Stone version was dire and insulting. What was she trying to achieve?

The most moving anti war song. Eric Bogle composed with great feeling and who could ever sing it so well

Hugo, thanks for your comments. You are superbly qualified to comment on the futility of war, especially in Afghanistan. In 1848/1849/1850, 20,000 soldiers and camp followers (British) invaded Afghanistan, only one, yes one, returned alive! It's a very famous painting. This means that our government has learnt nothing over the last 150+years. What I find obscene, is that all of those soldiers who are maimed, lost arms and legs, are thrown on the mercy of charities, when they return home. Those servicemen/women, who have given their lives and health in service of this country should not have to rely on charity. As a nation we should demand that our politicians take responsibility for our forces. Start a campaign, I'll support it.

A few people think the piano is too loud. It isn't on the original vinyl version, and June's voice sounds better too. Perhaps the digital elves in the aether have had their way with the recording.

dillysable

Does Joss Stone really think that she can sing.? My cat was more melodious when I trod on his tail. This was an insult and ruined what was otherwise a superb Festival of Remembrance June Tabor gave real meaning to this lovely song.Music lover.

Does she sing another version of this? I have heard a version of this song (I was sure it was her) that had a little more dissonance in the accompaniment - it was a little more erie and tense.

I totally agree with Barry Morgan, Joss Stone murdered a stunning song and I am sure that June Tabor would have been a much better singer for this type of tribute, would just like to add that the whole show was wonderful

Apparently Joss Stone and Jeff Beck are recording this song for Charity. However, they have decided not to record the most important bits! The final two verses! You know, the bits that speak of a 'whole generation, butchered and damned', 'the sorrow, the suffering, the glory, the pain, the killing and dying had all been in vain. Eric Bogle should sue them for butchering his song.

Much respect to Maddy Pryor and Sandy Denny, but June's version nails it for me. Piano was an excellent choice for accompniment imo. Song is actually "The Green Fields Of France".

Is this the best anti-war song ever? I could never listen to this song without crying my eyes out, until I learned to play the guitar and forced myself to sing it in public. It's so emotionally powerful and describes perfectly the futility of war. This year the Tories want to glorify WW1. They should not be allowed to do it. We should besiege the radio stations and ask that this song is played all day long, every day!

The piano is nice but as you say a bit too loud. Guitar would be far better.
