American singer Judy Collins, one of the most renowned voices to come out of the 1960s folk music era, sings a whaling song, with backing by the sounds of the Humpback whales. This song was written by George Scrogie, a miller at Fedderate, New Deer, in the early 1850s. Tarwathie is a farm in the lap of Mormond Hill, near the village of Strichen, and the song tells the story of a lad who left there to seek his fortune in whaling.

"Farewell to Tarwathie, adieu Mormond Hill

And the dear land of Crimond, I bid you farewell

I'm bound out for Greenland and ready to sail

In hopes to find riches in hunting the whale."

i have loved this one since 1970!! i understand it was written in 1857. i have just posted a keyboard version to a disco beat (please dont worry, it's fine and it's contextual; that's what they call the beat on the yamaha….) and to the related melody of 'the parting song'

The woman to blame

My father always wanted this played at his funeral. I tear up every time. Well done Judy.

Here's the deal... no one does this today. No one. It's music and it's musical and it's talent and it's amazing. Nothing comes close to this today... nothing. Thanks, Judy... thank you so much!!

Remember that you once lived near the beach with a barefoot co-ed in cut-offs and played this song on vinyl and it makes it easier to grow old,
