While many are blisteringly despondent and sometimes viscerally vacant, this track from their 2nd (and final) album before the lead singer hung himself during a concert, is a watershed funeral dirge that has influenced ambient depression musicians for decades. Its amazing the impact that a two album band has made on thousands of artists... but there it is.... dark, brooding and hallow to the core, and this song has it in spades.Before his death, Ian Curtis had mentioned that this song was about the struggle mentally disabled people have knowing that they're different yet trapped in a body that doesn't allow them to speak, think, see or interact with the world that zooms by around them. In particular he was struck by the loneliness of a disabled boy on his block as a child that never left his fenced front yard... ever. In fact after years of success and travel, Ian returned to his parents place only to find this boy had grown to be a man and was STILL standing in his front yard, cursed to never leave his open air cell.
