When I first started listening to Journey which was back in the mid to late 70's I found it kind of strange that Aynsley Dunbar - who made his reputation playing with a lot of heavy and/or experimental musicians - would end up in a band that was known for its mellow pop ballads. I mean this was a guy who had previously played with John Mayall, Zappa, Bowie and Michael Schenker, not exactly guys who catered to Journey's target audience. It wasn't until later that I found out that Journey started out as a very different group than it turned out to be after Steve Perry joined. There are some videos out there on YouTube the song "To Play Some Music" that I think might give you an idea of what pre-Perry Journey was like. I guess the record company - as record companies tend to do - were looking for some hit singles and figured they weren't going to get them with what Journey was doing at the time.
