I had not seen this performance before...marvellous. Kaufmann has the rare ability to BECOME a character while maintaining control of his instrument. Try listening without watching. You hear the exquisite memory followed by the desperate longing to live. It's all there. Add the physical characterization, even in a concert - amazing. If you watch very carefully in his concerts, before singing he "focuses" (attains mindfullness). I have seen singers that take much longer with less credible results. He probably can't really describe the process. Wish he would try.
