Lyrics:

Ride the blue wind high and free

She'll lead you down through misery

Leave you low come time to go

Alone and low as low can be

If I had a nickel I would find a game

If I won a dollar I would make it rain

If it rained an ocean I would drink it dry

And lay me down dissatisfied

It's legs to walk and thoughts to fly

Eyes to laugh and lips to cry

A restless tongue to classify

All born to grow and grown to die

So tell my baby I said so long

Tell my mother I did no wrong

Tell my brother to watch his own

And tell my friends to mourn me none

I'm chained upon the face of time

Feeling full of foolish rhyme

There ain't no dark till something shines

I'm bound to leave the dark behind

Ride the blue wind high and free

She'll lead you down through misery

Leave you low come time to go

Alone and low as low can be

I'm a fan. She had me at the first notes of "Old Fashioned Morphine."

I can see how this performance can rub some people the wrong way, but you also have to hear it in context of an album closer. The rise of digital music seems to have erased the idea of an album as a singular work of art not just a compilation. Overall I really enjoyed this song (and I am a huge Townes fan) and it makes a great closer to a great album

Great artist but I prefer the Townes Van Zandt version. Look it up and you won't be disappointed!

She's neither pretentious nor quirky, she's stylised, and a skilled musician - if you care to listen to any of her other records. I defend her from being tarred with this brush because her voice is one of clarity. Each artfully crafted specimen is rich with her love of the elements which have informed her style. Most are haunting laments and brimming with idea, subject and substance. She pulls together traditions of blues, country and jazz with her very own identity - give her a chance.

@benrauscher Fair comment Ben. I'm just a bit tired of overwrought musical posing at the moment - though I might get back into it one day. Maybe even soon!

@endacus do better and post it, please.

Totally pretentious. Musical vampirism at it's worst. Take a great tune by a great songwriter, record it, add a quirk or two and hope nobody notices how ordinary you are.
