Johnny Cash is/was a remarkable man. There is a show you should play, easy to find here, with his wife June Carter, in 1969 on Pete Seeger's TV show, Rainbow Quest, talk and music, just amazing. Totally laid back and unaffected. Joan Baez did a great version of this horrific song, actually 2 versions you can hear, same second line as Johnny Cash (most recording use a different second line). Thanks for posting it!

This is from the American outtakes bootleg, not Unearthed. The one where the CD has his name as Johnny Yuma on the disc. The Unearthed version is better produced.

My mother used to sing this song as a lullaby to me when I was an infant, but definitely wasn't Johnny Cash's version -- she made the 1800's folk song her own, and sang it with such emotion and love that it'd bring you to tears. Her singing this song for me each night as an infant might explain why I'm so fucked up as an adult, though. But, oh well, c'est la vie -- right? ^_^ Good luck, future generations. Your parents will sing songs by Lady Gaga to put you to sleep.. Scary.
