Johnnie Allan - Promised land 1983

Original by Chuck Berry 1964

I left my home in Norfolk Virginia,

California on my mind.

Straddled that greyhound, rode him past Raleigh,

On across Caroline.

Stopped in Charlotte and bypassed Rock Hill,

And we never was a minute late.

We was ninety miles out of Atlanta by sundown,

Rollin cross the Georgia state.

Straight off, I bought me a through train ticket,

Ridin cross Mississippi clean

And I was on that midnight flyer out of Birmingham

Smoking into New Orleans.

Somebody help me get out of Louisiana

Just help me get to Houston town.

Theres people there who care a little bout me

And they wont let the poor boy down.

(Instrumental)

Workin on a t-bone steak a la carte

Flying over to the golden state;

The pilot told me in thirteen minutes

Wed be headin in the terminal gate.

Swing low sweet chariot, come down easy

Taxi to the terminal gate;

Cut your engines, cool your wings,

And let me make it to the telephone.

Los Angeles give me Norfolk Virginia,

Tidewater four ten o nine

Tell the folks back home this is the promised land callin

And the poor boys on the line

(Instrumental)

Wonderful. What music should be about - fun, great beat and stage act.

Mr. Allan (née Guilott) was the assistant principal at my elementary school in the mid 70's. He used to play his albums on the intercom and then say "now y'all go tell your mama and daddies to go buy this album". It was great!

I got Ya . Didn't mean to troll your comment ....Besides , there probably are a lot of kids out there that learned something from it .

Well, if you are talking about the obvious....I would bring "minor point" to your attention.

Everyone gets the obvious `Swing Low´ reference . Even when changing the words , the reference is recognizable . Variations on the theme . There are no rules ..... Even when playing a cover song . :-)

Surely that accordionist isn't playing at all, Belton Richard plays a diatonic single line button accordion with two notes to each button, which sounds like what's been laid down on the track whereas that guy's 'playing' a regular 72 bass piano accordion with one note to each key

Doesn't beat Dave Edmunds' version.

i think this is the best version

Minor point the lyric is 'Swing low chariot', not 'Slow down chariot', the point of the lyric being a reference to the spiritual negro song 'Swing low sweet chariot'. A very clever metaphor used by Chuck to explain the song narrative.
