Those who tear up hearing this song, I do also (and to pretty much every other John Denver song). The combination of the beauty of his voice, his musicianship, and his lyrics are overwhelming. He is without a doubt the greatest singer/songwriter possibly of all time. His Greatest Hits album was the first album I had (at 11 in 1977) and I listened to it relentlessly. Nearly 40 years later, I still listen to it regularly. I know the songs by heart. He was so far ahead of his time in every aspect of life - an environmentalist, a humanitarian, a philanthropist. I never saw him in concert (was hoping to see him the summer of 1997) but then he tragically died. There are some people who make the world a better place. John Denver was one and the world is a much lesser place since he passed.

What inspired John to write this song (other than his love for the area) is..... he was watching an intense meteor shower in the Colorado Rockies.... hence the line... " I''ve seen it raining fire in the sky" :)

I grew up with his music.Besides his music, he was an activist for nature & for people. Those spewing hate, you have no clue what you're talking about. He wanted to be on the Challenger, but instead, a teacher was chosen as the first U.S. citizen to go up in space. He later said, he still would have wanted to be on it. " As a renowned environmentalist and humanitarian, Denver's membership in many organizations included the National Space Institute, the Cousteau Society, Friends of the Earth, Save the Children Foundation, and the European Space Agency. In 1976, he cofounded the Windstar Foundation, a non-profit wildlife preservation agency. In addition to founding the World Hunger Project in 1977, he was personally appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the commission on World and Domestic Hunger. He became a chair member of the National UNICEF Day in 1984.In 1987, President Ronald Reagan presented Denver with the Presidential World Without Hunger Award. That same year, he won an additional six awards for Rocky Mountain Reunion, his documentary about endangered species. In 1993, he won the Albert Schweitzer Music Award for humanitarian efforts." from biography.com

While he was alive, John never hid behind a mask or made any apology for his recreational activities. Interpret what you will from the lyrics, but it takes nothing away form his talents as a writer and musician, regradless of what your annonimous internet persona allows yo to spew. Myself and my friends all enjoyed his music along with the heavy rockers of the day equally. Some of us had the same vices and some of us didn't, doesn't change the soul of the song. That it still has a storng following today as it did in the 70's is proof that a great song stands the test of time.

What a lovely song about a man discovering where he was meant to be all along. As a child in the early 70's we would always go to Colorado on vacation. I have vivid memories of those little towns full of hippies. And I remember hearing mom and dad discussing how getting "Rocky Mountain High" seemed to be prevalent in Colorado... Why it took 40 years to legalize it is beyond me...

Enough hate talk, some of you, no names mentioned, just sound so unhappy that you need to take it out on strangers. You all need real lives. These computers will be the downfall of mankind. Nobody is kind to others anymore. Hide behind the computer and hurl hate talk at each other all you want. I've had enough of it myself.

I'm almost 52 years old and never stopped to take in the lyrics of this song. I finally understand what its about. Strapped in this Matrix so long I never stop to smell the roses. John did, and expressed it beautifully.
