Great jazz drummer Joe Morello plays "Take Five" by Paul Desmond on Late Night with Conan O'Brien in 1995.

For years I only showed this to drum students, and am happy to be able to share it now. I often showed this to demonstrate that all drummers, no matter how great, will drop their stick at an inconvenient time. You just keep going! We all know what a musical drummer Joe was, but it has been especially refreshing to hear from students of his over the years, including Dan Gotlieb, of what a great teacher and inspiration he was as well.

Take Five melody on a tenor? Might as well be playing it on trombone.

I wonder how many kids Joe Morello started off on their musical careers through his outstanding drumming.

In my opinion,Joe was of the very best drummers who ever played. Regarding current drummers, Steve Gadd has a rich and unique style that I find to be incredible as well.

Joe was far & away the most melodic & methodical drummer ever! He's the one of the very few drummers along with Louie Bellson & Gene Krupa (all of whom I actually met) in the sixties that played as musicians first & rhythm keepers second...

Oh dear Lord, come back to us Paul Desmond, all is forgiven. That song was never meant to have a 70s porno tenor sax sound.

In 1952 in Washington DC, the Kenton Orchestra was in town. Stan Levy was out sick. Joe Morello took over that night and played all those complicated arrangement as if he had been playing them all his life. What a remarkable musician!!!!!!!!!

There were three master teachers!! In order it was Joe Morello, Jim Chapin and Mickey Sheen. I happened to have Mickey Sheen. Joe Morello understood rock much better and by master drummers, it was considered an honor and a privilege to take lessons from him. A bout ten years ago I was at a Bill Bruford seminar and he told us if we ever get a chance to take lessons from him to do it!! He considered him the best teacher!!!
