When they begin

the beguine

it brings back the sound

of music so tender

it brings back a night

of tropical splendor

it brings back a memory ever green

I'm with you once more

under the stars

and down by the shore

an orchestras playing

and even the palms

seem to be swaying

when they begin

the beguine

to live it again

is past all endeavor

except when that tune

clutches my heart

and there we are swearing to love forever

and promising never

never to part

What moments divine

what rapture serene

to clouds came along

to disperse the joys we had tasted

and now when I hear people curse the chance that was wasted

I know but too well what they mean

so dont let them begin the beguine

let the love that was once a fire

remain an ember

let it sleep like the dead desire I only remember

when they begin the beguine

oh yes let them begin the beguine

make them play

til the stars that were there before

return above you

till you whisper to me

once more darling I love you

and we suddenly know what heaven we're in

when they begin

the beguine

I agree Yvonne. Joe Stafford was a fabulous singer. What happened to people's idea of good singing? She had beautiful tone, pitch, intention, etc. etc. and this music had real meaning. It's sad that you can't find any of this on the radio. People's taste has been dummied down so far that the appreciate for really fine singing may never return.

Love this song!! I wish I could haven been a young lady back then, men in suits and pork pie hats, a lady could be coy and seductive only with her eyes! Now everything is Vagina vagina!!! Penis ! Bang bang vagina! Romance baby- that is my poison!

As a kid growing up in the late Forties and early Fifties, loved Jo Stafford. Most of the stuff on radio now is just dross.

I wasnn´t even born when this gorgeous creature and absolutelly amazing voice was considered the voice of the america. What happened to us, to this new generation that is unable to recreate something so magical. Long ago and far away is absolutelly a killer. What a woman, what a voice. I wish this new generation would stop to listen to this poems.

She gets so deep into the meaning of the song without over emotionalizing. Absolutely brilliant!

One of the greatest female vocalists Ever! She was so much a part of my growing up, through the forties into the fifties.
