Wow.... I'm used to the idea of famous musicians substantially improving indie tracks they find and like, but... Clapton literally JUST covered this song. He modified it a LOT less than I would have expected. Same guitar crunch, same chords, same structure, same bridge. Only thing Clapton did was add a mini "Slow Hand" solo to brand it with his mark. Poor ol' J.J had a million dollar hit on his hands, but he absolutely could not have cared less... he had zero interest in fame and zero motivation to get rich... plus, people expected a song about cocaine to be more busy on the guitar, which Cale refused to give them (he was a famously sparse guitarist by design). From what I hear, Clapton was nice enough to make it a half-million dollar track for Mr. Cale, which allowed him a lot more freedom in his musical career, which ended in 1980 when he moved into a single-wide trailer without a phone and became a recluse. He described the decade as having been spent "Listening to Van Halen and rap". They mailed his Grammy to him in 2008. He was cool with that.Respect.
