he had that particular percussive voice on the organ that set him apart from the other cats.

True. Due to the MS symptoms, Jimmy starting using the Leslie speaker to support his back, as seen in the video. But he still sounds amazing!

@hapkido4 I just added a video of Rhoda Scott in the Other Organists. This is taken in 1972. Watch her left foot when the camera pans back.

@hapkido4 Sorry! But Rhoda Scott plays BASS with her left foot as well as did Gloria Coleman and Trudy Pitts still kicks bass. As to Jimmy McGriff his instrument before the organ was BASS. When he younger he did more pedal work. I saw him and Groove Holmes in the 70's playing twin organ and they use to get into playing pedal matches doing trade off pedal solos. Also, have you ever seen Dr. Lonnie Smith play. He's ALL over the pedals. It really depends on the the song sometimes.

@DrawbarCity I know how he felt about not being able to play the bass pedals.I have been playing the bass pedals for 25 years and pulled a leg mustle and can no longer play!!!! Hate to complain cause we are still here.

@organham Your very welcome. It started with his legs and then it was his memory. There were times when he would hit it and you NEVER knew there was an issue.

@organham During this time Jimmy was having issues with MS. Sometime he would use the pedals and other time he wouldn't. Like most of the Jazz Organ players of his time he double up on the pedals to give the bass line an extra kick. One of the things that made Griff's bass lines really great is he was a Bass player first before he made the switch over to keyboards.

Jimmy was one bad dude on Hammond B-3..I think he was definately the funkiest..In this video which was certainly in the twighlight of Jimmy's career, he is still the man even though in his playying is no where as quick as isin his earlier years. Jerry Weldon blows a barrell full of tenor. He smoked the joint out!!
