This is one of the great bluegrass songs, for sure: the lyrics, Jimmie's sardonic tone, and (of course) his nonpareil guitar playing. No one ever got the syncopation and bounce he achieved. But what absolutely stands out is the extraordinary banjo playing of J.D. Crowe. His intro and break are outrageous in terms of continuity and phrasing. Seamless. Incisive. Not just a bunch of semi-connected "rolls." And his back-up throughout is just as amazing. His interplay with the fiddle is off the charts. And that kind of banjo back-up for fiddle is fast becoming a lost art. On this track, no one does it better than J.D., not Reno, not Scruggs, not Osborne -- no one. For those starting out on banjo, the artistry on this track should be a model, an ideal to which one should aspire.
