I switch back and forth between this version and Schwarzkoph:This is more powerful and passionate, the other is exquisitely gentle and soothing.I love both.

I remember being on stage with her when she sang. There was a powerful wave that was spreading from her not only forward (which was the most, of course) but also to the sides and even behind her. It was an incredible physical sensation to be hit by that wave, hard to describe. Later I got this CD and never parted with it.

Norman and Strauss were musical kindred spirits.

Her voice gives and this Lied me a strange feeling of irreality. Sorry, I cannot put the exact feeling into words. Hope some of you will understand what I'm talking about.

I was given this recording many years ago and have lost it - this reminds me that I must just get it again. This is still the supreme edition of these songs. Her vocal command is an example to all singers - the space, the perfect position of the voice in her mind allows her to use the voice with ease and mastery. The voluptuous tone is never pushed, always perfectly executed, like a thoroughbred being ridden and occasionally allowed to gallop before being brought back to a walk. You always think there will be more voice and then you just get a glimpse - true artistry. Thank you to all the artists for making this hard to add any more superlatives!

At Bedtime"Now that I am wearied of the day,my ardent desire shall happily receivethe starry nightlike a sleepy child.Hands, stop all your work.Brow, forget all your thinking. All my senses nowyearn to sink into slumber. And my unfettered soulwishes to soar up freelyinto night’s magic sphereto live there deeply and thousandfold."

Magnificent. Although I wish she would have held that last note just a tad longer. . .

Masur was always mentioned as one of the Strauss experts. And how he treats this delicate music is a sensation. Norman is a miracle. She is floating on the orchestra, her breath, the breaks, the transitions she creates are unique. And once again it seems as if Strauss knew that one day there would be a soprano who completely understood his intentions. Jessye Norman has it all.

There is no recording like this. I fell in love with these pieces with this recording.
