During this period both Jeri Southern and Peggy Lee were recording songs Billie Holiday had first recorded, and this is one of them.  Billie was both honored and aggravated by her songs being appropriated by other ladies.  She once said "I always loved Peggy and the way she sounded, from the beginning, but the bitch borrowed every hit I ever had." I think she was half serious, half joking.  I guess the bottom line is all three ladies were highly revered and successful artists, at one time all recording for Decca with some of the same arrangers.  Add to the mix Sylvia Syms, an admitted Billie Holiday devotee, and then Carmen McRae,  a truly brilliant artist who also cited Billie as an inspiration and who eventually did a splendid Billie Holiday tribute album.  Is there talent of this breadth and measure today?  Yes, there is but you have to search for it.
