I keep coming coming back to my understanding of this song, which was a college one. When I got my first flat and (I thought) long time boyfriend the blues and greens went into over-drive. The flat was for him and then he moved out. As with this song, the realisation takes a while and then you want him to come "home". He clearly does not. Still, I do still have one of those bedspreads.

While I love Roberta Flack, I do not think her version holds a candle to Janis Ian's version. You can just feel the sadness in Janis Ian's version.

Roberta Flack's version is breathtaking but you have to listen to Janis' version in the context of this marvellous album, they are of a piece. There's a frailty here, the voice of a younger woman than Roberta projects, utterly lovely.

What beautiful lady, she was no ugly duckling. She is often on my mind. If only we could have the things we can't have, I guess that's what dreams and fantasies are all about. It's good that we can dream and fantasize. I love you Janis wherever you are and hope all is well you. When a man loves a woman, somebody wrote that.
