I'm not a country fan. I live in New York City. But last week I was in Nashville with a Saturday evening to kill and, on a whim, I went to the Grand Ole Opry and bought the only available seat on a Saturday night. I had never heard of anyone on the playbill that night, including The Whites (on the O Brother, Where Art Thou? soundtrack, which I have heard of), Exile, Chris Janson and this guy, Jamey Johnson. He walks out on stage in jeans, t-shirt and endless hair, carrying a plain old acoustic guitar, while seeming to ignore the flashy antics going on around him. And from the moment that he opened his mouth, he just owned the stage, the whole huge room. I was riveted, and moved. He sang two or three songs (that's the norm for the Opry), and one of them was "Give It Away". I had heard the song before, somewhere, which must have been the George Strait version. But this was a different experience. I was nearly moved to tears, it was so personal and real and deep. What dumb luck it was, to stumble through the doors of the Opry not knowing what I was going to discover. Unexpectedly, I now find myself to be a Jamey Johnson fan. If you ever get the opportunity to go listen to him play live, you just have to do it. If it goes too far to say that he will change your life, he just might help you feel it a little deeper, understand it a little clearer.William Moree
