heard Homer Quincey Smith's version, and it is the standard FOR HIS TIME ONLY;at that time everything African Americans had fought for in the Civil War and then the West and then Cuba and the Phillipines was almost completely eradicated by sharecropping, indiscriminate and ritualistic imprisonment of black men (sound familiar?) and Jim Crow laws enforced by the Supreme Court (Plessy vs. Ferguson was decided in 1896) and the original Sons of Liberty, the terrorists (by the way, America perfected if not invented nationally sanctioned terrorism--ask any Native American--over 400 years before Osama Bin Laden) known as the Ku Klux Klan;McDowell's version reflects the dawn of the Civil Rights Era after WWI, and so has much more valid claim to being the current standard version of this song;think of how Paul Robeson sang ever more militant versions of 'Ole Man River' throughout his career and Billie Holiday doing the same with 'Strange Fruit';

that's how you turn a cotton-picking field hand and chaingang road song into a civil rights protest anthem;grandma always said when life hands you lemons, make lemonade;
