Just because Crowded House made the song first, doesn't make it better in any way. In fact I find this version to be better because it feels as though the emotion is brought out in the song. One thing James Hillier Blount is good at, is expressing emotion via his songs. Crowded House's version feels less serious, James Blunt has brought it into the genre it belongs. To those who find his voice unbearable; he's different, very different to any other artist, he hasn't got the typical voice of your usual vocalist and if you can't take the difference, then this isn't the type of music for you. Your hate messages aren't needed.
