U2 recently broke this song out on tour for the first time in ages, so I went ahead and covered it. This song took me a while to figure out, especially the delay, but I think I did pretty well. I consider this more of a jam because it's not quite perfect imo and I also ad libbed a part in there just after the solo.
The song isn't very difficult to play, though. The sound is also not that difficult to replicate. One may find themselves struggling to replicate The Edge's delay settings though like I did. I didn't have trouble setting the delay time but getting it to sound as close as I could to the record was very interesting. I think on the album version his guitar is double tracked and I didn't double track here. Live he may use a bit of modulation or chorus. I used Amplitube for this cover as I really felt the delay in Amplitube is perfect for Joshua Tree era, late 80s U2 stuff (also used the same delay on my cover of "Exit" and "Electric Co.").
For the amp I used a Vox AC30 model amp (if you're using Amplitube it's the British Copper 30TB Model [TB standing for Top Boost, obviously, and Copper meaning the copper panel model AC30]) and just cranked the amp volume in Amplitube until I got this nice drive sound. The amps in the Amplitube software sound amazingly good, especially when you crank a Vox model or Orange model amp. You can get really nice saturated overdrive tones. You can even get good light drive and clean tones too. For the solo and the outro I used a boost pedal in the software just to slightly give the solo a little lift.
That's really all I used for the sound. I added a room reverb in post and mixed it down. I added a Bus Comp in Audacity when I made the final master to give it a little juice and help the guitar track really gel with the backing track.
EDIT: Also I want to add that during the solo you may notice that the notes I'm playing in the video isn't matching the notes in the audio. This is because the original take I recorded (which is the same audio take I recorded in the video) I messed up the solo so I went back and tediously edited out the solo in the recording software and re-cut the solo. Fortunately for me I was able to make a clean edit. I didn't edit anything else though. The only thing not from the original take in this video is the solo. Hopefully that clears that up.
