Cyrus Chestnut is an American jazz pianist, songwriter, and producer. Chestnut enjoys mixing styles and resists being typecast in any one niche, though his gospel sound is apparent on a number of his recordings. He continually uses the trio format to extend, elaborate, and refine the basic conception of the jazz rhythm section. In his own words, “This country and this art form are founded on the basic principles of freedom, whereby a person is able to think, say, or play what he or she chooses. Throughout the years as I look at history, all of my predecessors, regardless of what environment was, shared freely their thoughts and feelings in a swinging, musical way on the bandstand. They swung hard and made the listeners feel better leaving than when they arrived. This is the tradition I intend to preserve."

Shanghai Jazz opened in October 1995 and has been named "One of the Top 100 Great Jazz Clubs in the World." We have earned rave reviews for our food, service and ambience from the New York Times, Star Ledger, Zagat Survey and Inside New Jersey. Our philosophy is warm hospitality, gourmet Asian cuisine inspired by the seasons, a well-focused wine list and a full bar with almost a dozen beers on tap, including our own micro-brew Shanghai Jazz Ale. And of course exceptional value. We are proud to present world class artists 6 nights a week with no music charge except for special events.

Owners Martha Chang and David Niu returned to Martha's hometown of Madison, New Jersey after traveling, working and studying in Asia with the aid of a Fulbright fellowship. Inspired by Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s, when it was known as the "Paris of the Orient," we have sought to create a jazz club infused with "Jazz and Joy."

At Shanghai Jazz, we are delighted and honored to share our love of Great American jazz, regional Asian specialties and fine wine with you. Whether you enjoy dim sum and cocktails in our Long Oak Bar, an intimate dinner with family and friends, or a unique social or corporate gathering, we look forward to welcoming you to our home.

This wonderful pianist deserves to have his piano tuned before making such a recording...
