A late Woody Guthrie recording; one of his finest.

Great song, but I have to ask. He isn't singing with the verve and authority of his earlier records. Is this just the recording or was he really sick when he did this song?

Awesome...just awesome. I'm sitting here working w/ a Woody playlist playing in the background and was stopped dead in my tracks by this song. No wonder Bob Dylan said Woody taught him how to feel. I've never heard his voice so haunting...

This was probably just recorded as a demo, and basically amounts to the finally widely-available Guthrie recording. The song was written in protest of the Korean War, and it seems to have been recorded around 1952, when Guthrie was in the early stages of Huntington's disease, and suffering from pain from a recent injury at an encampment. This was not his last recording, though. In 1954, Guthrie would have a recording session for Decca, which would produce a solitary promo-only single. This recording has never been reissued, and while I have seen it to know that it exists, I haven't ever heard it, and I don't know anyone who has.One commenter said that this doesn't have the typical Folkways sound, but really...there IS no typical Folkways sound. Moe Asch would record whatever seemed interesting or worthy of preservation, wherever, on whatever he had. As such, the Folkways recordings of Guthrie that were recorded by him all vary drastically in quality, regardless of age. In fact, the same is true of Lead Belly's recordings. The last sessions of Lead Belly have a casual feel, as if they were recorded, at least in part, at Ledbetter's home. (I do remember some of them were recorded at a house party, but I don't remember where off the top of my head.)

It is not polished song but it is honest and carries a powerful message and question we must ask. I used to hear this song sung in coffeehouses in the 60's The song was also used in the credits of the movie Bob Roberts. The message is more relevant today. Sad to say what is old is now new, we stand on the edge of a plutocratic take over of our nation and the world. So it is important to know which side are you on? And will you tale it on your feet or on your knees? Well What will it be?

For those who may be unaware, this version is used by Tim Robbins during the closing credits of his brilliant 1992 mockumentary about creeping fascism in America, Bob Roberts. I've got to know, yes, I've got to know, friend Hungry lips ask me wherever I go Comrades and friends all falling around me I've got to know, yes, I've got to know ...

Why do your war boats ride on my waters? Why do your death bombs fall from my skies? Why do you burn my farm and my town down? I've got to know, friend, I've got to know! What makes your boats haul death to my people? Nitro blockbusters, big cannons and guns Why doesn't your ship bring food and some clothing? I've sure got to know, folks, I've sure got to know

Why can't my two hands get a good pay job? I can still plow, plant, I can still sow Why did your law book chase me off my good land? I'd sure like to know, friend, I've just got to know What good work did you do, I'd like to ask you To give you my money right out of my hands? I built your big house here to hide from my people Why did you hide, so I'd like to know

You keep me in jail and you lock me in prison Your hospitals jammed and your crazy house full What made your cop kill my trade union worker? You'll have to talk plain 'cause I sure got to know Why can't I get work and cash my big paycheck? Why can't I buy things in the place in your store? Why do you close my plant and my town down I'm asking you, man, 'cause I sure got to know
