AMG: Best known for its million-selling number one R&B single, "I Got My Mind Made Up (I Can Get It Girl)," Trenton, NJ, band Instant Funk had some impressive musical credits prior to that career-boosting single, having played on several sides for Gamble & Huff's Philadelphia International Records: Archie Bell and the Drells' Top 21 R&B hit "Let's Groove," the O'Jays' "Let Me Make Love to You," the Three Degrees' "Take Good Care of Yourself," and Evelyn Champagne King's "Shame." The group's wholly instrumental prowess can be heard on "Wide World of Sports," a track from its number one R&B gold album, Instant Funk, produced by the band's mentor, Bunny Sigler. Written by band guitarist Kim Miller, the jazzy cut was the pleasing flip side of "I Got My Mind Made Up (I Can Get It Girl)." It starts out with crowd noises before drummer Scotty Miller's snare pops break through bassist Raymond Earl's squish accents, launching the slowly building energy of track. Classically trained keyboardist Dennis Richardson's nimble piano runs and chords take the intensity up a notch before the track ends with what sounds like a looped, repeating tom drum pattern that bounces among what sounds like looped crowd cheers. Embraced by such radio programmers as WBLS New York DJ Frankie Crocker and others in various markets, "Wide World of Sports" received radio play as an LP track.
