Inside Out - Rage Against The Machine
There are several things you can wear on your head that will make me weary of anything coming out of your mouth. The two most concerning ones are dreadlocks and berets. There are exceptions, the Clash wore berets and the Bad Brains had dreads but normally it's a warning flag. I barely take politicians, bank tellers or crossing guards seriously but if they did the same thing while wearing a beret I wouldn't acknowledge them. I'm not sure what people do in France.
Zack De La Rocha with a fade talking for half the duration of an actual song about war and the media resonates more with me than hearing "Come wit it now!" at Woodstock 45 but ulitmately Rage Against The Machine have had a much greater impact on the Earth.
Before frontmen lectured me about soy based inks and what holidays to recognize from the basement of a health food store, Zack and his contemporaries were being bashed for "preaching" on stage. Funny I thought the nature of hardcore was preaching, I guess there's a time limit on talking that when passed becomes preaching.
The first Gulf War terrified me, I was convinced it was going to be Vietnam 2.0 and I was going to be drafted and attacked by those big desert spiders. CNN convinced me the war was over in under three hours and I felt calm. I was a few years away from being 18 anyway, I was just being a worry wart.
Whether or not you agree with this pre-song banter or realize the same fucking thing happened again and will happen until the end of time, you can't say this is bullshit. I'm not sure I want to hear the singer of some Pitchfork.com band scream at me about foreign policy or my carbon footprint but if I was sixteen years old and some band repeated this word for word I'd lose my fucking mind and think how cool this band was.
Disclaimer: I never liked Inside Out NYC which is probably why I'm registered as a Democrat
