In a sense I agree with you. Too many sub-genres can make it confusing and give butt-hurt scene kids something to argue about. On the other hand, they're also important in defining the music. If someone were to buy my cd, and asked me what kind of music I like, I could say metal not giving a sub-genre, but then they might get me something I don't like (example: deathcore, grindcore, brutal death metal). You see, knowing sub-genres is important but its also important not to take it too seriously.

I just prefer to call it awesome. Too many subgenres these days. Pretty much every band that has a unique sound gets its own label. It's all heavy music people. Labels are for people who want to keep things separate.
