Every day I spend my time drinking wine, feeling fine...Waiting here to find the sign that I can understand, yes, I am.In the days between the hours, ivory towers,Bloody flowers push their hands into the air...I don't care if I ever know, there I go.Don't push your love too far.Your wounds won't leave a scar.Right now is where you are...In a broken dreamDid someone bow their head?Did someone break the bread?Good people are in bed before nine o'clock. On the pad before my eyes, paper cries, telling lies,The promises you gave from the grave of a broken heart...HmmEvery day I spend my time drinking wine, feeling fine...Waiting here to find the sign that I can understand, yes, I am.I sit here in my lonely room...Don't push your love too far.You know your wounds won't even leave a scar.Right now is where you are...In a broken dream! And don't forget what I said?

Python Lee Jackson - IN A BROKEN DREAM

I'll bet a lot of people couldn't find this song because they looked it up or requested it under "Rod Stewart". It was only a minor hit in the USA (which was enough success to justify the UK release a few months later), but I don't remember hearing it announced on the radio as anything but a Rod Stewart record, so anyone who went looking for it had a good chance of missing it. It is a great combination of vocal and guitar performances with neither overpowering the other. Rod Steward, despite his later "Do ya think I'm disco?" image, had his moments and this was one of them. I hope Jackson's got more exposure than just this; he sounds great here.

Was Lee Jackson of The Nice and Jackson Heights anything to do with this track?

@ Pam SommervilleITYWF that's because it was RE-released in 1972. When Rod sang vocals on this for the first recording he was still largely unknown. He was just acting as a session musician. It was re-released in 72 after he'd become famous in the summer of 71 with the Faces on Maggie May.I remember being entranced by this when it came out again in 72. It is a great song, for sure, but you feel it should really be 6-7 mins long, with more space for contemplation - as if it's been condensed to fit into the single format. I'm not the first to say it, but once he became famous he rapidly lost it for me - his earlier stuff with Jeff Beck and then the Faces - when they were all just lads together - is so much better. Up to Every Picture Tells a Story. Take a look at the videos and the fun they were having in 70-71 on songs like Plynth and Flying.

This may be a Python Lee Jackson song but the popularity of this will always be attributed to Rod's distinctive soulful vocals and his star profile.
