The creator already confirmed that they were once girlfriends. My theory is that they have been broken up for a very long time (Bubblegum is about 900 years old according to the game Marceline is possibly older than that). In this episode they each got something taken from them that they wanted back. Bubblegum's item is a shirt. When they recover it Finn assumes that it is Marceline's because it is a black band tee. Bubblegum interrupts and says that it's hers and says that it means a lot to her and she wears it as pj's. In another episode she wakes up and smells it with a big smile on her face before even getting out of bed. In the song Marceline says "I forget what landed me on your blacklist. I shouldn't be the one that makes up with you. So why do I want too?" This could be just a reference to their fight in the episode, but she brings up what landed her on the blacklist in the first place. I consider this her way telling PB that she still loved her and PB is the one that pushed them apart. Another support for this is that the wall only opens for the truth and passion. It was supposed to open when a band sang together but she almost opened it by herself. I feel that this suggests that she threw her whole heart into the song.
