This Civil War era traditional song was arranged by Ry Cooder for "The Long Riders" movie soundtrack. Ry Cooder did the soundtrack for the entire movie. "The Long Riders" album won Best Music award in 1980 from the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards. Enjoy!
I tried to find a place to buy this directly from Ry Cooder, but didn't find it. There are sites all over that are selling the cd. Just Google it. Some folks say that The War was about slavery, land, and or money. It was about The Southern way of life being threatened by The Union. Try to imagine your financial income being subverted by "BIG BROTHER". Your money in the bank is now worthless, except for wiping your ass. Your business policies aren't yours to make anymore. Your taxes are doubled if not tripled. That's what The South was facing. Their rights taken from them and there wasn't much to do about it...except rebel, resist, and fight. Before you start throwing rotten fruit at me, I'm not racist, or intolerant. I'm simply speaking about a WAY OF LIFE, one that you were raised on and now you're raising you're children on it. And they will someday raise their kids this way as well. This is something that goes back many GENERATIONS. This way of life is not only your rights, it is your HERITAGE. I love this version, but I really like Hoyt Axton's version also. (I have it up). His was the first I heard & since I love Hoyt, it sorta stuck.
