I've made comments on other posts, but I have to say one more thing. To be a sell out...you have to first buy in to something. Because you can't sell nothing. If you think that blackness means you can't be square or intelligent or upwardly mobile or even Republican...YOU are the sellout. Because you've sold yourself out to someone's idea of who you are allowed to be. Black people are our own worst enemy when it comes to identity. Cube calling people oreo's and stupid shit like that...not every black person is hard or street smart. Usually those people have PARENTS and work ethic and a sense of what it means to have the whole world as an option, not something you learn in the hood or around the way. I know Cube evolved from these lyrics because who we are at 22 isn't who we are at 45. But when I read these comments and I see that some black people REALLY believe that blackness is connected to some skewed sense of actin' like a nigga basically, it makes me angry. Because I'm tired of our most ignorant monopolizing what being black is. You don't speak for anyone other than yourself. And if you choose to be a thug, a fool, ignorant, uneducated, deadbeat, jail bound, etc...that doesn't make you more black. It just makes YOU a sell out. Because you sold out your potential to continue to be someone else's caricature of what/who you are capable of being.
