"Dear Mr. Echo" ...will you please discuss or write somewhere the meaning of these lyrics? The nearest I can tell it's about using sleep, sex, drugs, or booze (or all of the above) to escape from guilt, shame, or depression. The subject of guilt, shame, or depression could be about morality, sex, drugs, societal pressure, or politics. All of the allusions are clear (wave my flagpole, warship, Guy Fawkes, inner sense/higher order theory) but I don't seem to be able to find any direct quotes from McCullogh on the meaning. Does anyone know for sure?
