This Hunter penned song was Barry Manilow's last US Top 10 hit in 1979. Clive Davis was a big fan and played this song for Barry. Here is a rare performance by Ian.

Every once in a great while there comes along a song that so ably demonstrates the human condition. This is right up there amongst the best and probably the best explanation of a Father and Son connection there is. while Cats in the Cradle might have been cautionary or enlightening this song is all about unspoken reconcilliation. Breaks my heart everytime and now that Ian is alive to sing it and most likely his father is not, just makes it more so. Manilow made me almost miss this genius.

It's easy to knock Manilow, but go listen to This One's for You -- a song he wrote for his grandfather. It's every bit as good as this song.

@Thriceitup5335 Agreed. One man's lullaby is another man's alarm clock.

@Thriceitup5335 If I wanted to hear someone sing the phonebook (do they still exist?) I'd find your comment hard to argue with.

Deconstruction is a lovely tool, but not a tool which works for every situation. Ian Hunter is a rocker. Putting him with an orchestra is pleasant. But in the end, bad idea.

Manilow's version suks, I even deleted it from my ipod. I don't like Ian Hunter, but here in this song, he nailed it. It's great. It really makes you think about love and death.
