The chords to Can't Explain are fairly easy, but the guitar solos are pretty tricky to decipher. Here's what I've managed to come up with. My version isn't intended to be a note-for-note duplication of the original recording. It's just a way I've come to play the song over the years.

First you'll see me playing this live on top of a simple backing track I made using Garageband. Then you'll see a voiceless tutorial where I try to make it easier for you to see the fingerings I use.

Guitar used as a Washburn Woodstock Studio A.

If you're a beginner, this is a great chord progression to learn:

E

x7999x

D

x5777x

A

xx7655

E

xx7999

These are known to some as I-IV-V (as in "one-four-five") chords because those are the numbers of the notes you get in the key of A. If you learn how to mess around with I-IV-V in any key, you can play most classic rock, blues or country songs.

I use a different E chord when I play the bridge ("I can't explain / I think it's love ...") because the open strings add more jangle:

E

x79900

C#min

x46650

A

507650

B

7x9870

I play the second part of the bridge two different ways in the video. Both show the same notes. Only difference is that they're played at different spots in the neck. What's happening is that I'm adding an extra finger or two in order to add a layer of melody to the chords. But you can get away with just playing the straight chords.

Sorry folks, but no tabs. I just not a tabbin' kinda guy.

Shameless commercial plug: If you're a Mac user, buy The Macintosh iLife '09 by Jim Heid. That's the book I'm using to teach myself how to use this stuff. This book is the reason you're able to see the picture-in-picture versions of the solos.

Finally someone showing how to do play it without a lot of talking about it.

Excellent work on the solo parts. Saved me a lot of time. Thank you for taking the time to post this. It's a shame people feel the need to be so critical. If they can do better that's great. Get it posted on here and we can learn from them too :-)

I agree it really doesn't sound much like Page, but in Pete's memoir, he does confirm the rumor that it is Page. It was interesting to finally read the truth from the man! I didn't believe it either till I read that.

EXCELLENT video! Not just your playing - which is very, very good - but the *presentation* and *filming* are terrific! If only all YouTube tutorials were like this!

Did Townshend use a Jazzmaster on the recording?

It's totally Townshend, that rumor was debunked years ago by Page himself. Of course he did claim he could have done it better.

@planetprince67 Pete did play the solo. Jimmy was there in case Pete couldn't nail it but after a few tries Pete finally did.

The song is just the same riffs repeated over and over. You got plenty of time to see the chords wether the camera changes or not. If you can't make this song out by watching this video you should go back to practicing a Horse with no name....dumbass.

Well done! I agree, the solos are tricky, especially because on the original recording, Townshend (or maybe Jimmy Page) uses a twelve string for the solo sections.
