Lake and Emerson belong in the rock hall, no doubt!

His voice got deeper and very rich as he aged... I like that version with Ian Anderson. Nice!

You don’t have to be an atheist to be ambiguous about Father Christmas, snow on the 25 of december or despair about peace on earth. You can be a believer and feel pressured to be joyful during Christmas for all the wrong reasons. You don’t have to be a fatalist to accept the truth in Greg Lakes “the Christmas you get you deserve”.Granted, this is one of the darker Christmas songs, but I feel it true, especially when one cannot be turned on to the Christmas cheer at the flick of a button. Sometimes one has to go through a darker region to appreciate the light there is.

It's not sinister, though I think it is dark. It's certainly cynical. It's odd that a great christmas song (my favourite xmas song) should be cynical about Santa ("I saw him through his disguise") and religion "they sold me a fairy story till I believed in the Israelite". That second quote I mention really blew me away when it hit me - at probably around the same time in my own life when gods and religion made increasingly less and less sense. To me, GL has also been cynical about religion elsewhere, particularly in Hallowed Be Thy Name. I suspect he's probably atheist.

The song is often misinterpreted as an anti-religious song and, because of this, Lake was surprised at its success. As he stated in a Mojo magazine interview:"I find it appalling when people say it's politically incorrect to talk about Christmas, you've got to talk about 'The Holiday Season'. Christmas was a time of family warmth and love. There was a feeling of forgiveness, acceptance. And I do believe in Father Christmas."
