"For the Beauty of the Earth" - Recessional Hymn 08 June 2008 (Youth Appreciation Sunday)

Church of the Redeemer, Episcopal

Morristown, NJ, USA

1-For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,

For the children ev'rywhere with their sad or joyful cries,

God of all, to you we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

2-For the beauty of the earth, for the glory of the skies,

For each child whose life of worth may be missed by human eyes,

God of all, to you we raise this our hymn of grateful praise.

3-For the hungry, homeless ones seeking life despite despair,

For the nations buying guns while the children wait for care,

God of all, this prayer we raise: Let us bring forth better days.

4-Thanks for gifts that children bring: love and trust and open hands.

Help us give them songs to sing, meet their needs as love commands.

God of all, this prayer we raise: Let us bring forth better days.

Tune: Dix

Text: Virginia Sargent

Camcorded live 08 June 2008

The pipe organ is J.W. Steere, Opus 701, 3/49, built and installed in the Church of the Redeemer, Morristown, NJ, USA in 1918.

Hello! What a beautiful set of new and fresh lyrics to go with the traditional tune! The original/traditional hymn poem already has very beautiful and transcendental lyrics, but this text is also a good substitute or additional companion! Does anyone know where I could find more hymn texts by Virginia Sargent? Or other similar hymns with a social justice focus? Thank you!

Thank you very much for this. It's so good to hear this song played and sung well and at a decent pace. It's such a joyful song that I am surprised how many of the YouTube videos have it played very slowly.

Love the way this organist played it. There was a little extra... something in the first and last transition to the chorus that was really nice and the stops they used in the chorus as well... It kept it from getting repetitive and gave it even more of an emotional punch. Really loved it, thanks for posting!

Thanks for this posting. My wife and I had this hymn at our wedding 30 years ago, and to this tune. These days one mostly hears the tune made popular by Rutter, and itself very beautiful too (and which we recently san at our Patronal Festival in our St Francis Episcopal Church here in Johannesburg, South Africa under the direction of my wife who is also a musician and organist). But so lovely to hear the tune here.

My grandmother's favorite hymn. It seemed to be constantly on her lips in her last months.
