Georges Bizet: Les pêcheurs de perles (The Pearl Fishers)

Zurga and Nadir's duet Au fond du Temple Saint

Son long voile déjà

Nous cache son visage!

Mon regard, hélas!

La cherche en vain!

Elle fuit!

Elle fuit!

Mais dans mon âme soudain

Quelle étrange ardeur s'allume!

Quel feu nouveau me consume!

Ta main repousse ma main!

Ta main repousse ma main!

De nos cśurs l'amour s'empare

Et nous change en ennemis!

Non, que rien ne nous sépare!

Non, rien!

Que rien ne nous sépare!

Non, rien!

Jurons de rester amis!

Jurons de rester amis!

Jurons de rester amis!

Oh oui, jurons de rester amis!

Oui, c'est elle! C'est la déesse!

En ce jour qui vient nous unir,

Et fidèle à ma promesse,

Comme un frère je veux te chérir!

C'est elle, c'est la déesse

Qui vient en ce jour nous unir!

Oui, partageons le même sort,

Soyons unis jusqu'à la mort!

At the back of the holy temple,

decorated with flowers and gold,

A woman appears!

A woman appears!

I can still see her!

I can still see her!

The prostrate crowd

looks at her amazed

and murmurs under its breath:

look, this is the goddess

looming up in the shadow

and holding out her arms to us.

Her veil parts slightly.

What a vision! What a dream!

The crowd is kneeling.

Yes, it is she!

It is the goddess,

more charming and more beautiful.

Yes, it is she!

It is the goddess

who has come down among us.

Her veil has parted and the crowd is kneeling.

But through the crowd

she makes her way.

Already her long veil

hides her face from us.

My eyes, alas!

Seek her in vain!

She flees!

She flees!

But what is this strange flame

which is suddenly kindled in my soul!

What unknown fire is destroying me?

Your hand pushes mine away!

Your hand pushes mine away!

Love takes our hearts by storm

and turns us into enemies!

No, let nothing part us!

No, nothing!

Let nothing part us!

No, nothing!

Let us swear to remain friends!

Let us swear to remain friends!

Let us swear to remain friends!

Oh yes, let us swear to remain friends!

Yes, it is her, the goddess,

who comes to unite us this day.

And, faithful to my promise,

I wish to cherish you like a brother!

It is her, the goddess,

who comes to unite us this day!

Yes, let us share the same fate,

let us be united until death!

It's impossible to compare the theatres and concert halls of 70 years ago with the massive venues today's opera singers perform at. I'm not a trained singer but have spent 20 years singing at amateur level and these two sound fabulous to me!Dmitri Hvorostovsky has a sonorous baritone voice to die for. The harmonious blend with Kaufmann's lighter tenor voice is absolutely magic! This performance would hold its own in any age.

Nails on a chalkboard. A spinto and a dramatic bass-baritone singing Les pêcheurs. What were they thinking!

I have grown to love opera, although not to the exclusion of other music. K.D. Lang singing Orbison's "Crying'" still brings me chills. However, I feel speechless admiration for voices that are trained. Hope you enjoy this. We have tickets to the Met's HD Live Series every year. Do you?

I don't think this is Kaufmann's best here, and i'm a little surprised, because at around that same year he was doing awesome things in other places, consistently great. Doesn't seem like he was ultimately comfortable in this venue, or maybe on that night, for whatever reason. There are sooo many factors that play into it. Even so he perked up as it went along, and certainly the beautiful timbre did shine through eventually.

To me Kaufmann sounds like he is trying to sing while someone is choking him.

Could this be the worst performance of this wonderful duet?

Doesn't cut it like the old Jussi Björling recording.

Great opera conveys large emotions, hugely felt. This requires singers with big, well-used and technically accomplished voices, capable of powerful fortes (SANS mics) and vibrant ppps. Do we have ANY such singers at the international level today?

Not that these two are BAD. But good grief, compare them to Bjorling and Merrill, Tucker and Merrill (in other duets), Domingo and Milnes, Corelli and MacNeil (again in other duets), Grand opera has shrunk precipitously during the past 30-odd years.

Times have certainly changed. Kaufmann and Hvorotovsky are probably our best today, a modest encomium. When, by the bye, did male opera singers in concert stop wearing tuxedos, start wearing casual dress, and begin using microphones? When did performing classical music become casual? And when did classical voices get so weak as to require mics?

Kaufmann is still young and can learn. If not, it'd become into another great instrument lost because non-well-used. Hvorostovsky, when singing his roles, a great bariton.

Pauvre Rutebeuf!

To MrCafiero: Those who can, do. Those who cannot, criticise. Nothing pisses me off more than pretentious, self opinionated twats like you. Does pontificating about something you'd probably never be able to begin to achieve make you feel superior, or does it simply feed your sad, pathetic little ego?
