Oh man, Bob Mould and his band rocked our faces off tonight! SO happy, what a good show! They did songs from the new album and Silver Age, from his band Sugar, and from Hüsker Dü. He gave us Love is All Around in the encore. This Minnesota girl sang along.

It is all about Minnesota. You can follow me a simple Minnesota Ex-Pat on Twitter at my name...

I think I heard this cover on like a hundred mix tapes, once upon a time.

i wish they'd made an official video for gerry rafferty's baker street.hey for once i can say i actually saw the band perform the song. when the sst tour came to palo alto i was walking down the street in my captain beefheart tshirt and the minutemen stopped me and asked for directions to the club. after that i had to go, right? so i got to see husker du, minutemen, and meat puppets

Uh huh, everything they did starting on Flipped Wigs (the beginning of the end of Husker Du) was a re-cycle/ripoff of the slower songs of NDR. They ran out of ideas, creativity, and their own identity. So they then proceeded to homogenize everything to sell records and to sound like every other 'alternative' band of the time. Their most bltant ripoff of sound was REM. Listen to candy ass grey and warehouse and try to convince yourself that this was just a 'normal progression' and not a sellout.

You don't seem to realize that this is a cover of a TV theme song...? So no, it's not a re-treading of Perfect Example. The Mary Tyler Moore Show took place in the Twin Cities, so there's the connection.

Not really. Had they been rockabilly I'd elected to not listen. Most bands who try to incorporate that into their punk mix are doomed to turn into all country lightweight pop crap for the rest of their existence. Example meat puppets. Real punk for one and a half records. Then country/instrumental/way too mellow garbage for the rest of time. Husker DU wasn't 'poppy' at all until New Day, They just showed flashes in Everything Falls/Metal/Zen but they were mostly full speed ahead fuck you punk.

There are very few punk bands that have a speed metal V style guitar. Many of their early songs were more pop than punk like 'DIANE'. I'm just saying that rockabilly is the foundation for many punk bands like the RAMONES and the CLASH who looked up to Buddy Holly and early Elvis. They made pop music along with HUSKER DU. They were more thrash when they started out, but changing style is normal even with bands who incorporate frenetic angst. Rockabilly is just minimalistic rock anyway.
