Loved this band - before they turned into 'Wang' Chung - dumbing down for the Americans. This debut album - 'Huang Chung' 'has some great tunes on it. And they could - as heard here - produce the stuff live too.

So that Old Grey whistle test was filmed at Goldiggers in Chippenham. I was there and remember it was amazing!

This track is off the self titled Huang Chung album. Hard to get now but I have a copy.

Yep, Red Box were the support. I agree...the record companies squeezed out all their originality and made them a lot less special.

The group seemed to choose this name, which in Mandarin translates as "yellow bell," going by the onomatopoeic sounds of a guitar. Additionally, singer Jeremy Ryder's stage name of "Jack Hues" is a play on the French phrase "j'accuse."

Right, I've been up in the loft, found the 'BBC2 in concert' video in stereo, watched it, fantastic quality those scotch VHS tapes were brilliant! (Seeing it's been in the roof for the last 30 years) I'll transfer to DVD and post it, hopefully in the next couple of weeks.

I have the entire Huang Chung BBC 2 concert on vidio, part of the 'Points on the curve tour' I'll put some on YouTube. I did have the sound track from the desk, but like an idiot I gave it back to the engineer!

I saw them as Huang Chung in '82 in Vristol. Really great and great projections too if I remeber right. Great album, shame I dont have it anymore.

@ babygers - yeah the Whistle Test appearance was great, and a later "full gig" introduced by good old Annie Nightingale was even better (sure wish there was some footage of THAT around), but I had the same thing happen: none of my friends knew what I was going on about either. Their loss I reckon.

@1963LeeH And I remember (as a 17 year old) settling down to the Whistle Test and these guys totally blowing me away. Told everyone at school the following day but nobody really got them then they sadly went all horribly Americanised and poppy but I could never begrudge them commercial success. Jack Hues=Jack Ryder's dad!!

Fantastic - I saw the band (as Huang Chung) at the old Marquee club not long after the album came out. Blew me away. Shame the sound (and name) changed into something less edgy.

@martinj40m this is going to sound stupid but you did know they were later wang chung that sung dance hall days the only one to reach the uk charts top 40

I remember watching this all those years ago and buying the album - great stuff....

Way cool! I was always kinda shocked that such a killer, non-commercial wave band could so quickly go so dance club commercial. I've tried tell so many people that Huang Chung was an actual, rocking band in their early incarnation but nobody reminds me. Guess I'll be passing this along! Way cool, thanks for posting bro!

I saw these guys in Gateshead around 1980, was blown away, I've got the first album on CD from Ebay, shame they sold out and changed their name.
