One of the two best cuts from a great LP, the first LP that acknowledged to the 60's Rock World that the " '50's' " really existed......and this was two years before Sha Na Na appeared at Woodstock.(Actually, this may be the stand-out cut from the LP that Ray Collins was born to sing on.)Zappa: A Genius, almost a Prophet.Addendum:My God.The Mothers use some old material from "Freak Out," their first LP, to salute the Four Seasons. (I've known this cut since I bought the LP in a bargain bin in March of 1971, and I just got it.)Further Addendum (for all you engineering/production-geeks):Listen to the drums... this is the first example I have ever heard of "gated reverb..." ...except "gating" anything is a digital mixing technique, and this, being recorded in 1967, had to be analog (i.e. tape, not disc, with a conventional board)...WTF?HOW?DID THEY DO IT MANUALLY?

he did it because he personally was dissatisfied with the performances and/or sound quality. And if people want to hear it, it's there for 'em too

Zappa loved doo wop, as much as he was being sarcastic about it here...

This is the original L.P. mastering of Ruben and the Jets on the Greasy Love Songs C.D. The original version had been unavailable on C.D. since the 80's because Zappa removed and re-recorded the drums and bass. You can buy it on the Barfko Swill website.

Ruben and the Jets... what an album. I first heard this when I was young and thought WTF? or whatever. But what an album, parodying Cruddy 50's songs. Brilliant as always, Mr. Zappa Paisley Tom, 06 22 2012

Aug 12 1968. On Saturday, Frank phoned and, although he’d only been gone a week, it was wonderful to hear his deep, sultry voice. He gave me instructions to take the master tape of Cruisin’ with Ruben and the Jets to the airport and express it to New York. Kansas drove me there and I got a kick out of insuring the package, no bigger than a box of chocolates, for fifty thousand dollars. (From Freak Out! My Life with Frank Zappa by Pauline Butcher - available on amazon & other bookshops)
