I'd heard what I thought was scream (Underoath et al). When trying to understand the appeal, I was directed towards Hot Cross. The appeal became instantly clear. Screamo is an inherently emotionally charged, punk-rooted, often experimental and always angry form of music. Underoath et al are inauthentic (meant in the existential sense of the phrase as well as layman's sense) mallcore disgraces.
