The best version of this song was recorded by the Kingston Trio, but in french exists a very nice translation by Greame Allwright (la ballade du clochard)

Really a very good song. Dark and poignant, not somber.

Hobo's Lullaby - Woody GuthrieThere is a touch of golden velvet in the vocal quality that almost echoes in the ambiance of a dark, soft emptiness, somewhere in our universe. This is probably a romantic over described feeling, because ideally, deep down psychologically, we would like there to be a heaven to which, we can hush our souls to rest in a dignified manner, thus bringing meaning and completeness to our brief existence in this, our beautiful universe. This is a fabulous masterpiece, one of my favourite tracks by Woody Guthrie. Thanks to T. A. Sedlak for this superb upload.

Great song but let me remind you guys that Woody did not write this song. The original writer was Goebel Reeves (probably spelled wrong)

Reading through the comments I can see that some need to read some history about hobos. There is a difference in hobos and bums/tramps. During the great depression the hobos were often soldiers trying to get home and would work to get from town to town. Bums, tramps . would not work.
