The theme is about the Batavi fighting the Romans though, so I think it's a bloodied Roman mask to signified the war against them.

Eine dieser Masken wurde bei Forschungen um die Schlacht im Teutoburger Wald gefunden, heisst es. Ich weiss nicht ob es sich dabei um eine spezifische Maske für das Rüstzeug einer Streitwageneinheit handelt. Man sprach allgemein von einer "Reitermaske". Kann aber auch sein, dass es sich um einen zeremoniellen Gegenstand im Zuge der römischen Kultur und deren Götterverehrung handelt. Wer weiss. Grüße
