Scene from the movie in which Handel is invited to take part in a competition with the famous composer Domenico Scarlatti. They both along with Bach were born in the same year of 1685. The scene is based on a real event when both composers were aged 23, both being judged equal on the Harpsichord while Handel adjudged the winner on the Organ. Both had enormous mutual respect for each other and it is said that Scarlatti, later in life, was known to cross himself in veneration when speaking of Handel's skill

Another nice competition would have been Scarlatti and Jean-Philippe Rameau; some of their faster rondos are similar, and both have some spanish influence in their music. I, for one, think that Rameau would have won at the harpsichord.

I prefer Alessandro Scarlatti, who was more innovative, than his son Domenico. Handel is my favorite Baroque composer, of course. "Up the dreadful steep ascending..."

Passacaglia in g from a harpsichord suite by Händel. this is an interpretation by Edgar Krapp (if I'm not all wrong), who is usually more known for his organ playing

That explains how Scarlatti wrote such difficult sonatas.

Handel didn't win in real life, he was pronounced better on the organ and scarlatti was pronounced better on the harpsichord.

This is the way I imagine it going down. In the middle of Scarlatti and Handel duking it out, Bach casually walks in, sits down, and starts improvising. Scarlatti and Handel proceed to give up and walk away from the futility of competing with J.S., declaring him the obvious winner. Hehe. Sorry, just had to say that. :) Although, I will also say that this piece, Passacaglia from Suite No. 7 in G minor by Handel, is wonderful, and I love Scarlatti as well. Apparently, 1685 was a good year to be born. Kind of like how 1912 was for golf with Sam Snead Ben Hogan, and Byron Nelson.

Scarlatti was by far the better musician.Except, Handel was a better composer. I think Beethoven would've been tougher for Scarlatti, to bad he was born later. His 3rd movement of Moonlight Sonata is amazing. Piano vs Harpsichord

I´m sure Scarlatti was more virtuos as Handel ... but if I could turn back time I would pull J.S. Bach out of the hole to go into the competition1
