Guy Lombardo and His Royal Canadians. Dance band formed in London, Ont, named in Cleveland in 1923, and known for "the sweetest music this side of Heaven".

Guy (Gaetano Alberto) Lombardo - Jun.19,1902 - Nov.5,1977; honorary D MUS (Western Ontario) 1971 - was its leader from its inception, ca 1917 as the Lombardo Brothers' Orchestra and Concert Company, until his death. The 'orchestra' was a quartet: Guy (violinist), his brothers Carmen (flutist, saxophonist, singer; see previous entry) and Lebert (drummer, trumpeter, b London, Ont, 1904), and Freddie Kreitzer (pianist).

The 'company' included, variously, the Lombardos' sister Elaine (soprano) and father, Gaetano (baritone, b Lipari, Italy, ca 1873, d Stamford, Conn, Oct.6,1954), and occasionally a Scottish comedian and dancers.

I am not going to join the discussion about who is the vocalist here, but he doesn't sound much like Carmen Lombardo, who I have heard mostly. Over her in England "The Sweetest Music This side of Heaven" was the line for Maurice Winnick, who later on produced the UK version of "What's My Line" on BBC TV.

The ole Lombardoite from Aus has a bit of fine tuning to offer :-) The vocalist in the '50's version playing here,is the velvet mellow Don Rodney,Guitarist before Bill Flannigan who came back in late '57 for a few months replacing Bill in the '57/58 NYE Concert Video for one,and a few new vocals with the band for a few months in 1958. He is playing guitar for Xavier Cugat in the "Stage Door Canteen" film,and if you look closely in the "Weekend At The Waldorf" Film,you might spot him as well..

This is not the 1931 recording. It sounds like the 1950 Decca record with Kenny Gardner doing the vocal.
