when i was a kid jammin this casette it was punk. there was no such a thing as emo... there was this and new wave... idk but the sex pistols were punk and the johnny rotten band the pil was new wave... i guess it had something to do with mtv's 120 minutes... idk

90's emo is different from 80's emo. Emo stands for Emotive Hardcore punk, or Hardcore punk with emotional lyrics, bands like gray matter and fugazi are examples of this. In the 90's Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Mineral, and all those bands changed the definition of emo. I'm not trying to argue with you, it's just that Gray Matter is often considered an emo band, I guess if we wanted to get really technical we could say they're post-punk, but emo fits perfectly.
