A few days ago, I got an email saying that there were further delays with the limited edition linocut print that was being included in the vinyl re-issue bundle I had ordered of Gravenhurst's first two Warp records releases. As each delay was announced, it confused me - I basically just wanted the wax - though the linocut would be nice I guess... A few years ago, I was dating a lovely, vivacious, amusing and amused archaeologist who lived in Melbourne when she wasn't out exploring the Pilbara. I had been down to visit her one weekend, and had brought along a CD I thought we would both like together. It was a volatile weekend that one - she told me she had started dating her housemate and she thought we should remain friends and she was sorry but not really. I left Melbourne pretty quick snap - my brain buzzing with adrenalized heartbreak, the last thing I thought to do was check the CD player. I left that CD there. Months later I would catch up with the girl again, and the first thing she said to me was "That CD you left in my player - its really really good! Where did you find it?".I had been writing reviews for the Canberran street press magazine BMA and one day in the office scouring the new releases for review, I had seen its cardboard slip sleeve cover with its linoprint and reference to a record label that rarely steered me wrong, and popped it on my pile. I listened to the recording of a young man, who had locked himself in a bedroom with just a recorder, a few mics and his guitar, and the scratches and slides on the strings percussed beautifully his sullen wistful songs. Not my type of music at all, but totally obviously outstanding. This morning I found out via my friend tagging me in a post on Facebook, followed by an email from Bleep, that Nick Talbot passed away this week - the songwriter and the main force behind Gravenhurst. While not all of their albums are superb, I wholeheartedly recommend getting Flashlight Seasons - the solo acoustic one I write about above and that this track is taken from, I love love love the dark and cynical rock monster that is his Fires In Distant Buildings LP of a few years later, and 2012s The Ghost In Daylight had some beautiful moments too. A voice that easily touched a part of my soul that few artists or even people have a line to.Sleep well.#music #gravenhurst #RIP
