Grand Funk Railroad

Mark Farner and Don Brewer's verion of Harlem Shuffle. Recorded in May of 1967, just a few months after the breakup of Terry Knight and the Pack. Released as a "Lucky Eleven/Quadico Records" bootleg album/cassette in 1974, titled "Monumental Funk". It's a decent record, in fact, it is a fantastic record, but a far cry from the primal hard rock style that Mark, Don and Mel would later be known for. It's been hard trying to get other facts on this record, so if any one has any information on these recordings, please hit me up!!!

This is recorded off an old record player, so the quality is not that great.

Grew up in Michigan. If this was a regional hit, I'm surprised not to have ever heard it. Then again, I suppose this song would've hit the airwaves a year or two before my ears became glued to the radio. Plus, I pretty much done with radio before the Stones version came out, so - if "hip" djs were playing this as counterpoint to the Stones - I'd have missed that too. In any case, to say I prefer this to the version by the Stones is an understatement.

Thanks for posting! Actually, these recordings took place one year earlier [May 1967] in Nashville TN, few weeks after Terry Knight had left the band. The Fabulous Pack (then) hadn't the weight of Rolling Stones, so Harlem Shuffle didn't hit the charts as it should... However, it became a regional hit, loved by Mid West radio DJs.
