In my opinion, this song is about two lonely people in love with someone they cant have. they console each other up on melancholy hill, which can be both a place and a state of mind.the plastic tree is something organic that has been made fake, in that sense, despite they're not who theyd like to be with, it is at least 'medication'.toward the end of the song, the main character decides that instead of pursuing what he cant have, he falls in love with the other person.

I have listened to this song many times, and it is only now that I hear the "ooooh"s in the background near the end of the song. it makes me realise that this song is alot sadder than the lyrics suggest. because those "ooooh"s remind me of whale song; sad, lonely, forlorn and, well...melancholy. I feel an ache in my chest when I hear it.

And thats fine with me. More people booing at his concerts. Id perfer MORE negative publicity for that guy then the same amount who like him. But thats just my opinion. I don't go around talking about Justin on every music video I enjoy like a real hater. I made that comment a year ago and I have never made another one like it.
