Actually, this timeless song first appeared in the New York stage production of KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY which opened in October 1938. There's a clip here on Youtube of Walter Houston (Angelica Houston's grandfather) singing (just the audio -- not the visuals) the FULL verses of the song he debuted on Broadway. Too bad doesn't do the FULL version with the 2nd version of the verse...but he does it sublime justice just the same.

The main thing I love about the way Gordon MacRae sings is the emotion he always includes in any song he sings! I wish he were still with us! Love, Liz

Being a long-time Gordon MacRae fan, I was surprised to hear his great rendition of this song, which for some reason I'd never heard. He does a wonderful, so believable version of this lovely song. He was such a beautiful singer.
