Boy in a million, idol, a big star I didn't tell you how great you were I didn't grovel and scream and rip your brand new jacket at the seams Ms Ripley always had a gift for the sudden deflationary detail: her lyrics came closer to real poetry than most did back then. It's a shame she never crossed over onto the poetry scene; the way Pete Brown and Donovan managed.

Maybe the song is better than "Terry" - I think it is - but the arrangement does not have the same drive and assurance, though I like the brass and piano they provide no propulsion. It's such a clearminded yet heartfelt lyric - I am sure it's the equal of anything at all in the 65 charts in that respect.

I remember Kenny & Cash playing a demo by Twinkle & Road on Big L, 266 . . something about my pussycat's got rabbits feet?! The things that stick in your mind for 50 years :-) It was crazy and maybe didn't get issued.

@mothersfreakout Check out the Janice Whaley version of it, she has made every Smiths song. It is brilliant, as most people say the Smiths doing this song was one of the worst thing they ever did.
